Position Summary

The Intern Field Staff position is the starting point for future outdoor educators and expedition leaders at Ecofieldtrips.

Interns are immersed in the day-to-day delivery of experiential learning programmes while developing the knowledge, practical skills, confidence, and professionalism required to become successful field educators. Through mentoring, structured training, and hands-on experience, interns progressively take on greater responsibility throughout their internship.

While interns are here to learn and develop professionally, they are also valued members of the field team who actively contribute to programme delivery and the overall experience of students and teachers.

Interns are expected to contribute positively to the team, demonstrate initiative, embrace feedback, and actively participate in all aspects of programme delivery while embodying EFT’s mission of connecting people to the planet.

Key Responsibilities

Learning & Professional Development

• Participate fully in all internal training and professional development opportunities.
• Learn EFT programme standards, operating procedures, and safety systems.
• Observe and learn from Senior Field Staff.
• Develop confidence in public speaking, facilitation, and group management.
• Seek regular feedback and demonstrate continuous improvement throughout the internship.
• Take ownership of your own professional development by setting personal learning goals and actively seeking opportunities to build your skills and confidence.

Programme Delivery

• Take responsibility for delivering appropriate programme components as confidence and competence develop.
• Support educational activities, workshops, and outdoor challenges.
• Help facilitate games, reflections, and environmental education sessions under supervision.
• Build positive relationships with students, teachers & clients while creating an engaging learning environment.
• Represent Ecofieldtrips professionally at all times.

Student Supervision

• Support the supervision of students throughout school programmes.
• Encourage participation and inclusion within student groups.
• Assist with behaviour management under the guidance of senior staff.
• Monitor student wellbeing and communicate any concerns immediately.
• Help create a safe, welcoming and supportive atmosphere.

Equipment & Field Operations

• Prepare, transport and maintain programme equipment.
• Assist with activity setup and pack-down.
• Support meal service, campsite operations and general programme logistics.
• Maintain organised equipment and storage areas.
• Take pride in caring for company resources.

Teamwork & Culture

• Demonstrate initiative by assisting wherever needed.
• Participate actively in staff briefings and debriefs.
• Support fellow team members with professionalism and respect.
• Embrace EFT’s collaborative, adventurous and service-focused culture.
• Contribute positively to the living and working environment during residential programmes by demonstrating respect, initiative and responsibility.

Qualifications & Experience

• Currently studying or recently graduated in environmental science, biology, education, outdoor leadership, tourism, marine science, citizen science or a related discipline.
• Passion for experiential learning, conservation and environmental education.
• Previous experience working with young people is desirable but not essential.
• Current First Aid & CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
• Lifeguarding or equivalent certification is advantageous.
